I went on vacation again :) I stayed in a town called Angels Camp, CA - it's in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about an hour east of Stockton, CA. It's called the Gold Country, because there was a lot of gold mining in the area and logging, too. Nowadays, there are a lot of vineyards and tasting rooms. Most of the towns there have old buildings from the 1800s in their downtowns, so they try to promote old-timey tourism.

I walk around my neighborhood a lot, but usually its on Shabbat, so I can't take photographs. But the fall weather has been so beautiful lately, I fit in several walks during this week. Here are some photos of Los Angeles dressed in autumn hues. Enjoy.

Thanksgiving 2011

Thanksgiving in SoCal - you never know what you'll get. Last Sunday, we had a torrential rainstorm - water flowing down my street, up and over the curb. Yesterday morning it was 45 degF when I got up at 7 am; but by mid-day, it was 75 degF! And today will be in the 80's. Expect just about anything except snow ;)

This kind of weather lends itself to beautiful skies - here are a couple of sunrises.

The pomegranate in my front yard is turning gold and losing leaves. At the same time, my little cassia tree is blooming away. My garden usually has something in bloom all year long - another perk of living in SoCal.

On Thanksgiving, I like to bake pies. I tried a new recipe this year - an apricot jam tart that has ground almonds in the crust:

I love that the holiday has "thanks" in its name - we all should be grateful for the good things in our lives. Thanks!

Last week I went to the Huntington Library to see an exhibit of furniture and decorations by Sam Maloof, a master woodworker. He lived in an enclave of painters, potters, and other artisans. Here are a couple of impressions:

Happy Jewish new year, that is. In between holidays, I still have to commute to work, plus go here and there on errands and such. The photos this week are mostly outdoors - with fall around the corner, the sky has turned interesting again. And even everyday things like traffic signs and office buildings take on a creative look. Vacation in Bend, Oregon

Hello again. I went on vacation for a week to Bend, Oregon. Most people who visit Oregon go to Portland, which is on the coast of the Pacific Ocean west of the Cascade Mountains. Bend is on the eastern side of the mountains, in the central part of the state. The coast is very wet and cloudy, since most of the moisture is trapped by the Cascades. The eastern part of the state is high desert - more like northern Arizona. Mountains, red rock buttes, forests, small towns (Bend is the big city around there and it only has 85,000 citizens).

I'd read a few articles about Bend and decided that I'd like to see it. It's a very beautiful area. I spent a lot of time hiking, sight seeing, window browsing. One day I drove down to Ashland where they have the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and saw a few plays.

I was in Philadelphia over the 4th of July weekend for my niece's bas mitzvah. All three of my sons graduated from college this month - Sholi from Southwestern Law School, Dov from UCLA Law School, and Dani from Otis College of Art & Design. It's amazing. It's hard to imagine them not in school, but it's exciting to see them move on to the next stage in life. B"H, life is good :)

I've been busy lately and haven't had the opportunity to post. This week is no different, but I've 'seized' the moment to put up a few photos from this week's commute.

I bought a new point and shoot camera - a Panasonic Lumix ZS8. Besides having full manual settings, the biggest attraction was its 16x zoom, plus wide angle 24 mm. I've always been frustrated with the typical 4x zoom on most compact cameras. The first couple of photos below show its capabilities.

This past Sunday I went to a workshop organized by the Society for Calligraphy. The leader was Ed Fong, a long-time calligrapher for the City of Los Angeles. He showed us examples of work from his office (including a series of comic signs that were for in-office fun) and then he showed us his method of adding dramatic watercolor clouds and texture around the calligraphy. It was a lot of fun - and I can see using it in some projects I have in mind. It was nice to have a day of creativity.

Today is a mix of photos: I thought the sky with the contrail and moon looked very geometric. The moth was an early morning visitor on my garage door. The view of the Griffith Park Observatory on a gloomy afternoon. A pseudo-villa on the open-house Pasadena Heritage Spring home tour, including dragon lanterns and grapefruit orchard. Enjoy.

I walk a lot on Sabbath - yesterday I went for an hour walk in the morning and a two hour walk in the afternoon - but I'm not allowed to take photographs. This afternoon, I went back along Clinton, a nearby street, and took some photos of flowers and plants I had noticed yesterday.

The first photo is of a blooming star jasmine that actually grew up through the stop sign/street sign pole and is tumbling blossoms from the top! The second is of camellias, the third is a creeping fig, the fourth is a tulip tree (a type of magnolia) and the last is a succulent known as "Sticks on Fire" for obvious reasons.

Today feels like spring - we'll see if it lasts awhile.

Amazing creativity

Today I went with a friend to the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. They have a special exhibition on Benjamin Franklin that was really well-designed and interesting. He led an amazing life: printer, newspaperman, Poor Richard's Almanac, scientist, and diplomat. I think that he would enjoy living nowadays and seeing the progress of our generation.

Besides that show, the museum also had two other interesting exhibits: one on carved gemstones and another displaying American quilts. They were both outstanding! The skeleton hand below had each bone carved individually from a semi-precious stone called caledony. And the egg that looks like it's made of glass was actually carved from quartz. There's also a close up of a "crazy quilt"from 1900. The last photo is a detail of silver decoration on a Chinese ceremonial apron.

It's a small museum whose permanent collection is centered on the Pacific Rim, but it's worth a look if you're ever in Orange County.

It rained for a few days this week, including yesterday (Saturday). Today the air was very clean and crisp (only 60F - down right cold in SoCal!) and the sky was a beautiful blue.

I went to LACMA again today to see the Fashioning Fashion exhibit one more time before it closes. From the 3rd floor landing of the BCAM building, I could see the snow-capped mountains of the San Gabriel range, just north of LA. I've included both a panorama and a close up view, which includes the Hollywood Sign and the Griffith Park Observatory. Enjoy this unique view of Los Angeles.

Chinese New Year

I went to the Huntington Library & Gardens in San Marino (near Pasadena) today. They were celebrating the Chinese New Year and had lots of special performances and demonstrations throughout the gardens. Besides the puppet show and fan dancers and calligraphy, I think one of the most interesting demos was a man selling candy "lollipops" made out of sugar syrup in crazy fancy designs - dragons, fish, even profiles. The photos below show some of what I saw today. Enjoy.

Winter in LA

Every weekend, the weather is completely different. Two weeks ago, it was raining; last week, it was cold. This weekend, it's been close to 80 degrees F! I'm not ready to pack up the sweaters and return to t-shirts full-time... not quite yet. Next weekend is supposed to be 20 degrees cooler - we'll see...

This morning I went on a hike in Runyon Canyon Park. The park used to be the actor Errol Flynn's residence; his house is long gone, but the property is now a dogs welcome/leash free wilderness park. The standard hike is only 2 miles; to lengthen it, I walk to the park from home; this adds an additional 3 miles, making it a respectable 5 mile hike. It's nice that a little bit of nature lies only 1.5 miles north of where I live.

Below are some views from today's hike. My walk takes me past the apartment building that my grandparents owned in the 1960's and 1970's. It looks pretty much the same as it did back then.

The first week of December 2009 I went on vacation to Hawaii. I stayed in Poipu on the south coast of Kauai. It was my first visit to Hawaii and I had a really great time. I think I put close to 300 miles on my rental car - and Kauai is a pretty small island!

...but today was 85 F. By Wednesday though, it's supposed to be down to 65 F again, so winter should be back on track.

When it's so warm and sunny here, it's hard to imagine that in other parts of the country, they are having blizzards! Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois had 2 feet of snow yesterday.

I don't know where the year is going - Chanuka is over and December is half gone. This week's photos are a combination of impressions - leaves changing color, foggy mornings, bright lights at night, artwork where you least expect it. And a few twinkling menorah lights to start it off. I hope you enjoy them!

first serious rain of the season after the threat of drought...keep praying for rain!

Many people in Israel light Chanukah lights in a special box that they place outside their front door - this is one from our neighborhood."A small pinpoint of light dispells the darkness"...the view of our Chanukiah (menorah) from the sidewalk outside.

Thanksgiving week

Thanksgiving is always great, but it always goes by too fast.

Thanksgiving day I hang out with the boys - turkey, pies & movies. The Friday after T-day I volunteer at Operation Gratitude - they send care packages to soldiers overseas. There are hundreds of people at the Armory in Van Nuys - manning the packing assembly line, taping, labeling, and filling out custom forms (my traditional job).

The roses are from my front yard ("Mr. Lincoln" and "Alec's Red"). And the other photos are from the commute. Quite a variety of pics this week, don't you think?

Well, it finally feels like fall - SoCal style that is. 40's (F) at night, around 60 (F) during the day. Break out the sweaters!

Happy Thanksgiving to you all - my favorite non-religious holiday. Even though a lot of people don't really think about the meaning of the holiday, I like that it requires you to say the word "thanks"!

Last week was the last huzzah of summer - it was above 90F (32C) for most of the week! Finally, though, the temperature is back to normal - and the trees in my neighborhood are turning colors and losing their leaves, especially the pomegranate by the front porch.

LACMA, sunrise, and construction workers

This week is a mix of photos - I was at LACMA today and they have an exhibition of European clothing from the 1700's to 1910's. I love costumes and I've sewn a lot, so it was pretty wonderful to see the detail in these amazingly well preserved outfits. Go see the exhibit if you live in SoCal.

Next to the fashion exhibit are Olmec statues - one of the photos captures an "up close and personal" encounter with a patron.

Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Weekend

For the past 10 years or so, I've been a volunteer at the Pasadena Heritage Craftsman Weekend. It's a full 3 days with tours and lectures and a vendor show; I usually volunteer as a docent at the Sunday Home tour. The event was this past weekend and this year I also worked at the Friday home tour in West Adams, a section of Los Angeles near USC, where there is the start of a renovation movement of the craftsman homes. Most of the photos in this post are from the house in West Adams where I was a docent: there was a lot of down time between tour groups, so I spent that time taking photos. If you like old houses that people have invested a lot of love, time and work into, you should check out the home tour next year. In the meantime, enjoy these photos.

A week ago I went to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl with my sons. We saw the Chemical Brothers, Chromeo, and Yacht. Techno type dance music - not my usual genre, but we had a great time. The laser show combined with video graphics projected on a backscreen were amazing.
Yesterday went to the 80th birthday party for my aunt - lots of cousins, second cousins, etc....

The photos in today's post actually don't have anything to do with Memorial Day, except that they were taken this weekend. But I've been thinking a lot about the concept of Memorial Day and hope that it means more to people than just a day off from work.

Sundays are my big days for getting things done and doing fun things. Yesterday was no exception. Here is a pictorial diary for yesterday's events:

8:00 am - Pasadena City College Flea Market (It's big! 2 levels of a parking garage and 2 outdoor lots). I visit my friend Jan who sells antiques and Elan who sells teak imports from Bali, plus a few other regulars.

10:00 am - Hiking the Sam Merrill Trail above Altadena to Echo Mountain. Because of the Station Fire, a lot of the trails in the San Gabriel Mtns are closed; this is one of the few that are open, but it wasn't too crowded that day.

5:00 pm - Wedding of some friends, held in a hall in Tarzana. The pictures are of calm moments, but the reception was pretty lively.

A really great day!

It's really still Sunday, but since I was downloading the photos off my camera this evening, I figured I might as well choose my weekly five and put them up.

I was in Pasadena today at the Bungalow Heaven Home Tour. I live in a 1926 Tudor Revival craftsman house, and I've found that I really enjoy viewing and learning about the Arts and Crafts movement. Everything from architecture and furniture to textiles and tiles.

Having said that, the five photos I've chosen this week actually don't contain any of those things :) A little bit of portraiture, and a lot of noticing of details. I hope you enjoy them.

The first two pictures this week are from the house warming party my girlfriend had for her new apartment. The beautiful baby boy is her sister's and the second picture is of my brother.

The last two images are from a history of photography class I took, in this project I am emulating John Baldessari.

Last week was the end of Passover and I just didn't get a chance to post any photos. This week I'm making up for it by posting a day early.

Spring is definitely here (although it's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow) and my garden is blooming like crazy. Here are 6 photos from my front yard garden. Enjoy.

Hey, Chav. Sorry I've been inconsistent. I'll get the hang of this yet! You're likely to get a lot of pictures of the house, because it has been so *blah* outside & in. Hopefully spring will pick that up. Here are my 5 pictures for the week. The weather was actually decent on Saturday, so I took a few pics as I snuck a walk in.

David and I have been exchanging photos every week via email since November 2009. Each month we kept saying we should post to a blog instead, but we never seemed to get around to setting one up. Well, the time has come!

We've invited a few others to post as well, but I think David and I will be most consistent

This is my first attempt at blogging, so please excuse any rookie mistakes.

Here are my five pics for this week. I was working in the garden on Sunday and everything is starting to bloom now.
